Amazon plans expansion of North American facilities in Mississippi and Alberta

Company plans new centres in Edmonton, Canada and Northern Mississippi

Online retail giant Amazon.com Inc. is opening a 1-million-square-foot distribution centre in Leduc County, south of Edmonton, which will reportedly create 600 full-time jobs by 2020.

The centre will be situated in Nisku, Alberta, and will be the company's 11th distribution facility in Canada, and its second in Alberta.

It already operates a similar facility in Rocky View County in southern Alberta, where it employs more than 1,500 full-time workers.

Amazon's other fulfilment facilities are located in British Columbia and Ontario.

The Seattle-based company says workers at the new centre will be responsible for picking, packing and shipping larger items such as outdoor equipment, patio furniture and bicycles.

Amazon has also announced an expansion in Mississippi in the north of the state although it is not known yet when the consumer goods fulfilment center in Marshall County is expected to open.

The facility is expected to create 850 jobs over three years.

Amazon is also updating an existing 554,000-square-foot building in the Chickasaw Trails Industrial Park, situated southeast of Memphis International Airport in Tennessee.

Mississippi Development Authority is providing a $2 million grant for building costs and a $4 million grant for road improvements. Marshall County is providing assistance for road improvements and a property tax exemption worth about $6.3 million. Tennessee Valley Authority is also assisting.
