Amazon to Hire 80,000 Workers for Holidays

Seasonal Hiring Represents 14% Increase From Last Year

Amazon.com Inc. said it plans to hire 80,000 seasonal workers for its warehouse network in the U.S., representing a 14% increase from last year as the company brings its massive distribution facilities closer to urban centers.

The increase is smaller than last year, when the Seattle company boosted its seasonal hiring target by 40%, compared with 2012. Retailers including Kohl’s Corp. and Macy’s Inc. have said they plan to bump up their seasonal hiring as they’ve boosted store counts.

Amazon said it has 50 U.S. warehouses and expects to have at least 15 package sorting centers by the end of the year.

The staffing may reflect a projected 20% increase in Amazon’s fourth-quarter revenue, according to consensus analysts’ estimates.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it is increasing staffing after hiring too few workers over the past year.

Macy’s said it would add about 86,000 seasonal workers, up from about 83,000 in the year-earlier period, while Kohl’s plans to add about 67,000 workers, up from 50,000 a year ago. Gap Inc. is hiring 63,000 workers; it hasn’t previously released its holiday hiring expectations. United Parcel Service Inc. said it would add between 90,000 and 95,000 seasonal workers to help meet the expected surge in deliveries.
