Amazon to build over 3 million-sq-ft distribution centre in Colorado and open first Iowa warehouse

Construction beginning on massive new fulfilment centre at site next to Colorado Springs Airport and e-commerce giant plans to open 645,000-sq-ft facility in Iowa

Amazon is beginning construction on a new four-storey warehouse next to the Colorado Springs Airport. The initial floorplan is for 850,000 square feet but across four floors will potentially add up to nearly 3.4 million square feet, making it one of the company’s largest facilities.

Amazon has said it will be a sorting and distribution centre for the company’s consumer goods.

Amazon.com Services paid $6.33 million to acquire the 69.2 acres in the Colorado Springs Airport's Peak Innovation Park.

Amazon also announced in a press release that it will open its first fulfillment center in the state of Iowa in the city of Bondurant. The site, which is anticipated to launch in late 2020, will create 1,000 new full-time jobs.

At the new 645,000 square-foot fulfillment center employees will work alongside Amazon robotics to pick, pack and ship small items to customers such as books, electronics and toys.

“We are delighted to be opening our first Iowa fulfillment center in the city of Bondurant and look forward to creating 1,000 new, full-time jobs with Amazon’s $15 minimum wage and industry-leading benefits,” said Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment. “The site will help us continue to serve customers with great delivery options and we appreciate the strong support from local and state leaders.”
