SATAWU strike to hit Transnet operations

The South African Transport & Allied Workers' Union (SATAWU) will begin a nationwide strike at the state-owned transport operator, Transnet, on May 10th

The aim of the strike is to cripple the country's ports, pipelines and rail freight operations until the workers' issues are addressed

SATAWU and the United Transport & Allied Workers' Union claim that, together, they represent 85% of the 50,000 workers in the country's transport industry

The South African Municipal Workers Union has expressed its unconditional support for the strike, and urges Transnet to meet with the workers and comply with their demands - which, says SAMWU, are both reasonable and legitimate
