ALC pushes for single national transport regulators

The Australian Logistics Council (ALC) has welcomed the outcome from this week's Australian Transport Council meeting in terms of single national regulators in rail, maritime and heavy vehicles

According to the ALC's CEO Michael Kilgariff, it is critical that agreement be reached on the operational details for a single national heavy vehicle regulator, and a national rail safety regulatory system be developed

ALC is also committed to making the Australian Maritime Safety Authority the national safety regulator for all commercial shipping in Australian waters

Kilgariff said that a key strategic objective for ALC is to ultimately support a Single Land Transport Regulator with seamless regulatory arrangements across all transport modes

"The transport and logistics industry is a critical part of the Australian economy, generating 145% of Australia's GDP and providing more than one million jobs across 165,000 companies," said Kilgariff"ALC estimates that every 1% increase in efficiency will save Australia around $15 billion"

He pointed out that Australia's freight task has more than doubled over the last twenty years, and is expected to almost double again by 2020

Consequently, the need to drive efficiencies in the transport and logistics supply chain becomes imperative, as does the elimination of unnecessary costs due to inconsistent regulation between jurisdictions
