3PLS, Brexit, Platooning Trucks, And A Hackathon!

A Hackathon? Yes! A Hackathon!

For those of you not familiar with the term Hackathon:

"The word “hackathon” is a portmanteau of the words “hack” and “marathon“, where “hack” is used in the sense of exploratory programming, not its alternate meaning as a reference to computer crime. The term seems to have been created independently by both the developers of OpenBSD and the marketing team of Sun; these usages both first happened in 1999

Starting in the mid to late 2000s, hackathons became significantly more widespread, and began to be increasingly viewed by companies and venture capitalists as a way to quickly develop new software technologies, and to locate new areas for innovation and funding.

Hackathons typically start with one or more presentations about the event, as well as about the specific subject, if any. Then participants suggest ideas and form teams, based on individual interests and skills. Then the main work of the hackathon begins, which can last anywhere from several hours to several days".

#disruptlogistics

Usually it’s computer programmers, but in this case it will be logistics talent, and they will not be programming, but they will develop new solutions and opportunities for existing and future logistical issues. The “Disrupt Logistics Hackathon” is part of eft’s 3PL Summit & Supply Chain Officer Forum, which will take place next week October 10-12 in Venlo, the Netherlands. It will be the European version of the successful hackathon that was held at the US 3PL Summit earlier this year. You can read about the results of the first hackathon here.

“Logistics faces two major challenges right now – innovation, and attracting the best talent. We want Disrupt Logistics to drive the solution to both these challenges forward”, says Haley Garner, Head of Research and Content for eft.

Proud to mentor young talent

There are two reasons I’m very much looking forward to the hackathon. First, I’m very curious about what solutions and propositions today’s young logistics talent will come up with. And second, I’m honored to say, I have been asked by eft to mentor one of the teams of young talent.

Let’s not forget about the conference

But there is much more than just the hackathon. The 3PL Summit is packed with interesting presentations on a broad spectrum of logistics and supply chain subjects. 350+ C-level logistics and supply chain leaders will gather in Venlo to talk about themes like innovation, collaboration and growth.
